Stair Components Building Your Staircase

Stringers, treads, handrails, and risers in beautiful and durable pine.

Lamtech is today one of Scandinavia's leading manufacturers of stair components in pine.

A staircase connects floors and levels, needing to be easy to walk on, robust, and blend seamlessly with architecture, design, and environment. All parts such as stringers, treads, handrails, and risers must function together, whether it's an outdoor deck staircase, entrance stairs, or indoor staircases being built. At Lamtech, designers, carpenters, purchasing managers at construction companies, or individuals can order stair components that meet high standards for both beautiful finish and durability.

For those who prefer pine for their stair components, sourced from the finest areas in northern Sweden, Lamtech is the place to find it. We only purchase the best timber and are FSC certified. Before arriving at our facility, the timber is sorted for sawing into root, middle, or top stocks. The top section of the tree is used for stair products where a surface with visible knot characteristics is desired. Here, the knots are larger in diameter but lighter in color.

The root stock is used for stair components with a small knot structure. Small knots originate from the tree's younger days and are found on the lower part of the trunk. They are often small but tend to be darker in color. Subsequently, the timber is dried until the moisture content is between eight to ten percent and sorted in the planing mill. For steps and stringer components, 50 x 150 millimeter planks are split and planed into three laminations. This process ensures straight and virtually knot-free A and B sides, perfect for creating stylish and sturdy stair components.

What makes stair stringers durable?

The combination of craftsmanship tradition, creativity, and high-quality wood products. We offer stair stringers in solid pine as well as a combination of pine and HDF board. After over ten years of development and use, our combination of pine and HDF board remains strong. Lamtech's solution consists of glued-laminated stringers with HDF board on both the inner and outer sides. The material consists of a pine core with a three-millimeter layer of HDF glued on top. This combines the strength properties of wood with the smooth surface of HDF. It not only provides excellent durability but also makes it easy to paint with a neat and uniform finish.
Our products represent a natural evolution, considering that a significant portion of stairs in the Nordic region are made from pine, aligning with our commitment to offer what our customers need. To ensure that the wood can be painted without the risk of knots bleeding through, Lamtech has collaborated with staircase manufacturers, clients, and suppliers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland to develop a solution that delivers both high quality and affordability. Today, this material is one of our most popular products. Want to learn more? Or see what our stair components look like? Visit our reference page and contact us!

What types of tread components are available in stock?

Tread components in clear-knotted pine are stocked and sold by us in sorted A and B grades. The top surface of this product is virtually free of knots. Healthy knots are allowed without restriction but are sorted to ensure an even knot structure across the entire board. There may be occasional small black knots with a diameter less than ten millimeters, but primarily knot-free lamellas are used for the front edges. On the underside of the treads, round, fixed black knots with a diameter under twenty millimeters are allowed. The treads are delivered unplaned in double widths, allowing two treads per tread product. As stock items, the tread products are available in thicknesses of 40.5 or 42 millimeters. The standard width is 616 millimeters, and the treads are supplied in length modules of 100 millimeters between 900 and 1,700 millimeters. Since the treads are delivered unplaned, they have an oversize of approximately 25 millimeters. The above are standard dimensions, but for larger series, you can get other dimensions and designs.

What does high-quality stringer components entail?

To us, it means clear-knotted pine. At our artisan factory, stringer components are produced in two grades: A/B for open stringers and A/C for wall-mounted stringers. This means you get an outer surface on the exposed stringers that is virtually clear of knots. Occasional black knots may be allowed if they are solid and have a diameter under ten millimeters. The outer surface of the wall-mounted stringer is of the same quality as the exposed stringer. However, the side facing the wall allows for various defects to a greater extent, which does not affect the strength or appearance of the stringer since both types of stringers are always sorted with the visually best lamella on the outermost layer.

Currently, Lamtech's production is divided with approximately 70% A/B grade and approximately 30% A/C grade. This means both types of stringers are included in the packages. If you want to know more, you are always welcome to contact us for a free quote and additional information. As stock items, Lamtech always has pine stringers in two different thicknesses: 40.5 and 42 millimeters. The widths in stock are 308 millimeters and 616 millimeters. Stringers are supplied in modules of 300 millimeters ranging from 3,900 to 5,100 millimeters. The lengths of the stringers are determined by the length of timber delivered to us, which is why certain lengths may not always be available. Feel free to ask us if you have any specific requests. We are happy to provide advice and assistance!

Are you looking for stylish tread components for modern stairs?

Lamtech manufactures tread components with a small-knotted structure on demand. This product is particularly suitable for modern stairs aiming for elegant and narrower tread components. On the upper side, knots with a diameter of generally ten millimeters are allowed, though occasional knots may be slightly larger. The lamellas are sorted to achieve a consistent knot structure across the entire board, with virtually knot-free lamellas used on the leading edges. Occasionally, a round knot with a diameter under ten millimeters may be allowed. On the underside of the treads, round, solid black knots with a diameter under twenty millimeters are permitted.

The treads are delivered unadjusted in double widths, allowing for two treads per tread product. They are supplied in a thickness of 42 millimeters. Common standard widths are 616 millimeters. Treads are provided in length modules of 100 millimeters ranging from 900 to 1,700 millimeters. Since the treads are delivered unadjusted, they have an allowance of approximately 25 millimeters. For larger series, alternative dimensions and designs can be accommodated. Start by contacting us, and we can accommodate most requests. Are there multiple grades of small-knot pine stringers available?

Yes. At Lamtech, we produce two grades of small-knot pine stringers in Swedish pine: A/B grade for open stringers and A/C grade for wall stringers. On the outer side of open stringers, knots up to ten millimeters in diameter are permitted, while on the inner side, slightly larger and more knots may be allowed. The outer side of wall stringers maintains the same quality standard as open stringers. On the side facing the wall, however, various defects are more tolerated, as these won't be visible once the staircase is installed and finished. Both types of stringers are always sorted with the best-looking lamella on the outermost layer.

Production is divided approximately 70% for A/B grade and 30% for A/C grade, ensuring both types of stringers are available. Contact us if you prefer to order wall stringers exclusively. Small-knot pine stringers are always made to order and delivered in standard modules of 300 millimeters, ranging from 3,900 to 5,100 millimeters in length. Please note that stringer lengths are subject to the lengths of the timber delivered to us, so certain lengths may not always be available. For larger volumes and series, we can customize dimensions according to your requirements. Want to learn more? Or see what our stair components look like? Visit our reference page and contact us!

How do you become a leader in stair component manufacturing?

Lamtech started as a carpentry shop but has evolved into a craft industry where raw materials, expertise, and sustainability are three crucial pillars. Quality is always our focus, from selecting wood products at the outset through every step of our factory processes. Manual oversight, including multiple inspections of lamellas, ensures that only those meeting our standards for moisture content, straightness, and knot density proceed to final production. This approach minimizes complaints and assures customers receive wood products that deliver on our promises. All waste material is repurposed into pellets sold locally. We adhere to FSC guidelines in sourcing Swedish wood, and continuously strive to reduce our environmental impact. Interested in learning more about our manufacturing?

How is a staircase built?

Building a staircase is not a simple task. A staircase is often considered a load-bearing element and structural part of a house, which may require a building permit for alterations or new constructions. If you're a homeowner planning to build an indoor staircase, it might be wise to first investigate whether renovating the existing staircase is feasible, as renovation is often simpler than constructing an entirely new staircase.

A staircase consists of several components and is a relatively complex structure indoors. The most common type of staircase in Sweden is an L-shaped curved staircase. The load-bearing part is the stringer, which can be located on the side or underneath, either on each edge or centrally underneath the stairs. The steps of the staircase are also known as treads, and if the staircase is covered, there are also risers. It's important to ensure the staircase is wide enough to accommodate tasks like moving furniture up and down.

What does a staircase cost?

A staircase is a relatively large investment. It's also a complex structure that needs to be load-bearing, which affects both material and labor costs. Additionally, the cost is naturally influenced by the dimensions and materials of the staircase. Lamtech manufactures staircase components in pine. However, a good piece of advice is to prioritize quality and think long-term when planning. If you're considering building a staircase yourself, ensure you have the necessary expertise or seek assistance from professionals, which is often the most cost-effective approach in the long run. Want to learn more?
